I work in a manufacturing environment and Paul has provided material in a shortened package for easy read and quick access when necessary. The fact that he has mentioned many successful leaders in our country and how they operate within what Paul has described in the book must have taken him quite awhile to gather the information and develop the book. It was a good read Paul and I will pass the book along to my colleagues here at Dell.
Precise Leaders Get Results is a step by step guide to elevate your role as a leader. So often books on leadership speak of lofty results but rarely give you the steps to get there. Paul Thorton has done a masterful job of giving you exactly what you need to grow as a leader, be more valuable for the company you work for and more fulfilled along the way. A must read for leaders interested in making a difference in business today.
This is a great leadership overview -- ideal for new leaders and a good "refresher" for established leaders. The author strays from the "precise leadership" theme a bit (which this would have been a five-star review had he been able to tie that theme in better throughout), but that's not a distraction from this being an overall great leadership book. Honestly, I'd use this book as a textbook in a semester-long leadership class....each chapter is short enough to be covered with enough time to go into further examples, case studies, etc.
This book concisely and precisely describes what it takes for someone to become a strong and effective leader. Professor Thornton identifies and describes important actions and characteristics that are key to leadership success, while also describing the various leadership styles that can work in achieving this goal. It seems that becoming an effective leader is not accomplished by a one-size-fits-all methodology, but that, instead, different leadership styles can and should be used depending on the nature of the interaction. Having a keen sense of when and how to differentiate leadership roles is something Prof. Thornton indicates is a characteristic that all leaders should strive for to be at their best. Motivation, measurable goals, types of power and identifying opportunities are other areas that the author describes in this book. It is a great read for everyone.

As a minister and head of a church, I found Paul Thornton's book a useful tool in affecting change. The book outlines in checklist style the process of approaching people, gathering together those with the right skills and creating a plan with defined responsibilities for each participant. For the individual leader, Mr. Thornton speaks of making a positive impression and maintaining focus on the central themes throughout the process. Leadership demands that one listen and learn from others and value their input.
Impactful presentations and emphasizing common goals help to clarify roles and responsibilities, while creating new leaders from the congregation who now enjoy taking on special projects and missions. Thornton's book further emphasizes that one continue to measure the pulse of the situation; remaining involved, asking questions and observing in an enthusiastic way. While Paul Thornton is my father, he has also been one of my best teachers and one of my go-to business mentors. I recently assumed a new role within my organization and have referenced this book to help me define goals, be more result-focused, make some difficult decisions regarding staff and process. His points are clear and concise and this book is an easy, quick, read. If you are an Executive that travels often, you could easily complete this read during your next trip. Also, I wouldn't say this is just a book for seasoned leaders; it is really for anyone who wants to be an effective leader or who is interested in implementing some new tactics in their current leadership role.
